Abstract. The scientific lecture demonstration has been an integral part of science education from the seventeenth century to the present day. Although the "heyday" of great scientific demonstrations was the nineteenth century with virtuosos of the caliber of Humphry Davy and Michael Faraday, many of today’s masters of the art use demonstrations to make science fun and understandable, to encourage students to pursue science as a career, and to enhance the "scientific literacy" of our citizens.

Key Words: Chemistry and History; demonstrations; lecture demonstrations; chemical education; famous demonstrations; institutions; sourcebooks; safety guidelines; techniques; scientific literacy
