Barghouthi*, Jeannine Perrault, and L. H. Holmes, Jr. Department of Chemistry and Physics, Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA 70402 Published online: 1 October 1998 Abstract. This article describes an experiment that can be conducted to cover basic fluorescence concepts and study the effects of solvent polarity. It introduces students to fluorescence spectrophotometry and illustrates the effects of the solvent’s dielectric constant and hydrogen bonding capability on fluorescence-emission spectra.
