This undergraduate laboratory experiment challenges students to use their combined knowledge of organic reaction mechanisms and spectroscopic analysis to determine the product of a reaction that has several possible outcomes. The result is that students gain the “real-life” experience, commonly encountered by most research chemists, of characterizing and identifying an unknown organic substance.
