Cellular Automata are widely recognised as the basis of “The Game of Life”. It is less widely known that they can be used to study a variety of scientific problems. This paper outlines the mode of operation of a Cellular Automaton, and illustrates its application to the simulation of bacterial growth on a virtual Petri dish.
