On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and K. S. Krishna’s report in 1928 of the scattering of light, a discovery that earned Raman the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, this article reviews Raman’s life and career, the circumstances of the discovery, its predecessors, the Nobel deliberations, and later developments and applications of the effect, which has evolved into a standard chemical method.
