Abstract. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of Willard F. Libby (1908–1980), who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for his method to use carbon-14 for age determination in archæology, geology, geophysics, and other branches of science,” this article recounts his life and achievements with an emphasis on his method of radiocarbon dating.
