Abstract. The inaugural FYI-Chemistry conference, sponsored by the International Center for First-Year Undergraduate Education (ICUC), was the focal point for a three-day gathering of 170 chemical educators from throughout the world. The conference theme, “First-Year Chemistry: The Richness of Difference,” was chosen in recognition of what chemical educators can learn from each other as a result of common interests that span yet widely different geographical and cultural settings. We present an overview of the conference together with summaries of a wide range of symposia, including “Social Justice and Responsibility” and “The Role of Mathematics Preparation in Student Placement” in First-Year Chemistry Classes.
