On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, this article summarizes the life and career of Henri Moissan (1852–1907), with emphasis on his isolation of fluorine and his invention of the Moissan electric furnace, for which he was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
