Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, rbentley@pitt.edu Published online: 28 August 2007 Abstract. Students need a working knowledge of prochirality in connection with NMR spectroscopy, isotopically labeled compounds, and enzyme specificity; however, the concept of prochirality often presents some difficulties for them. A general account of this subject, suitable for students and including nomenclature, is presented here. A recently published comprehensive and mathematical approach to prochirality is evaluated in terms of student abilities and needs.
