Abstract. This obituary-tribute for Leslie E. Orgel (1927–2007), Senior Fellow and Research Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where he directed the Chemical Evolution Laboratory, discusses his life and career, particularly his contributions to ligand field theory and studies on the origin of life.
