A hand-held spectrofluorometer with a grating for spectral analysis was constructed for helping secondary students understand excitation and emission of fluorescing solutions. It was designed to give students hands-on experience with light properties of fluorescent (merbromin, chlorophyll) and non-fluorescent (food coloring) solutions and allows students to qualitatively and visually investigate different emitted and transmitted lights.
