An undergraduate experiment is described in which students prepare a relatively simple meso cyclic sulfite ester that has diastereotopic protons due to germinal coupling and analyze the NMR using density functional theory. Students then subject he molecule to a photochemical extrusion reaction and examine the photochemical reaction by NMR (1H, 13C, COSY and HMQOC) techniques.
