Abstract. The Chemistry Scholars Program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been developed to recruit well-prepared high school students into the Chemistry major at UAB, to retain these students as Chemistry majors until graduation, and to train these students to become peer leaders. This is done through financial support, involvement in the Chemistry Department teaching assistant training program starting in the first year, and the development of additional Chemistry courses. The Chemistry Scholars students have become valuable members of the Chemistry Department through their service in laboratory courses and recitation sections by positively promoting the Chemistry Department and the University. A number of these students have successfully completed research and honors research in Chemistry at UAB, and have a very good placement rate in graduate and professional schools.
