Abstract. A simple and inexpensive experiment, which can be used in an introductory experimental chemistry course, is proposed. Basic thermochemistry concepts, fundamental laboratory techniques and simple calculations are required. A group of 176 students of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) have tested the experiment and the results show that it can be successfully applied for freshmen chemistry students.
