Abstract. In 1992 in connection with my American Chemical Society symposium held in Denver, Colorado on March 28–April 2, 1993, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Alfred Werner’s coordination theory of 1893, Fred Basolo asked me if I could find the first use of the term “coordination” or ”coordination chemistry.” The tentative results of my attempt to answer his question are presented in this article.
