Physical chemistry can be a very challenging course for students. They often lack the mathematical skills, study habits, and appropriate attitude to achieve success. This paper will discuss how student active approaches have been used in a physical chemistry lecture class at Salem State University for the past six years. Barriers to learning, student attitudes and classroom atmosphere will be discussed. Student and instructor assessment on how well student active strategies helped them learn will be presented.
