Abstract. Alfred
Robert Bader, chemist, philanthropist, and art collector died of heart failure
on December 13, 2018 at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Isabel;
sons, David and Daniel; and seven grandchildren. Through hard work and attention to detail,
Bader fostered a lengthy and successful business career. He co-founded
Aldrich Chemicals in 1951 from a rented Milwaukee garage. The firm merged later
with Sigma-Aldrich Corporation, now owned by Merck KGaA of Germany. Bader left
the board in 1992. He was also president of Milwaukee-based Alfred Bader Fine
Arts. Bader created numerous grants and scholarships, donating hundreds of
millions of dollars. He also worked with people from vulnerable populations,
including the Roma (Gypsy) population in central Europe.
