Abstract. In this paper, we describe a senior level instrumentation laboratory. The purpose of this laboratory is to demonstrate the usefulness of GC-MS as a means to follow the formation of diacetals by reacting 1-hexanal with methanol and ethanol. Reaction conditions play an important role in the synthesis and GCMS is used to analyze all products. Students will analyze successful reactions, byproducts, and conditions where no reaction takes place.
