A constant battle in the Physical Chemistry laboratory is access to the required equipment and a lack of the monetary resources to acquire the needed equipment. We attempt to revise the experiments using available and more modern equipment without spending excessive money. We have updated the dipole moment experiment from the Sime text [1] and included a distance learning extension using quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations.

Information for Bringing the Dipole Moment Lab into the 21st Century is
available as a PDF file. The system of interest is selected. In the example
given, the system is dichlorobenzene and toluene. One part will be treated
molecular mechanically (solvent), the other quantum mechanically (solute). ( 295 KB)
