Differntial Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a vital analysis technique in materials chemistry. Allowing undergraduate students to get exposed to various analytical techniques early in their academic career can enhance their overall laboratory experience. Here we illustrate a multi-day laboratory experiment designed to allow students to synthesize a known materials dye (tetrabutyl-3,4,9,10 perylene tetracarboxylate) and gain exposure to DSC. This laboratory is ideal as a multi-lab experience aimed at the second semester of the organic chemistry laboratory series.
