Love Department of Chemistry, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC 27858, loveb@ecu.edu Published: 14 October 2023 Abstract. A An experiment is described in which a diazonium salt is prepared and then used to synthesize three separate products. One part of the experiment involves preparation and evaluation of the acid-base indicator known as Methyl Red. A second azo compound is also prepared and isolated. Hydrolysis of the intermediate diazonium salt to yield a phenol is also described.

Supporting Materials: The background information on the experiment provided to the students, the experimental procedure and the “write-up sheet” students use to report results for the experiment are included in the Supplemental Materials. Copies of the “instructor’s notes,” as well as questions used in pre-lab quizzes are also included, as are mechanisms of the two key reactions. (233 KB)
