The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges and opportunities for educators in higher education and has forced courses to be either completely online or split into hybrid/face-to-face sections in order to allow for proper social distancing. Many different teaching methods have been used with varying success in our department and around the globe. Here we present an unique approach to teaching split courses in the areas of biochemistry and organic chemistry. Results from course evaluations, course surveys, and DFW rates show that student engagement was maintained while student learning continued.
