McQuarrie University of California-Davis, Davis, CA 95616, USA Published online: 25 March 1996 Abstract. A simple model of a crystalline solid that leads to an electronic band structure is presented. The development requires no quantum mechanics beyond that taught in most physical chemistry courses and can be taught in a single 1-hour lecture.
